Longyuan Pingtan Wind Power, 85 percent of which is owned by the China Longyuan Power Group, has an installed capacity of 106 MW. It has generated sales revenues of 150 million yuan with net profits of 19.58 million yuan during 2010. In the first half of 2011, however, only 43.91 million yuan of net profits were made, with sales revenues amounting to 81.42 million yuan.
Fujian Wind Power, with a 90 percent stake owned by the China Longyuan Power Group, achieved 13.4219 million yuan of net profits in 2010 but encountered a loss of 1.8626 million yuan in the first half of 2011.
It is estimated that the loss was partly due to Fujian Wind Power’s failure to get a CDM subsidy because of excessive power generation.
Industry experts noted that the main returns on China’s wind farm investments come from electricity generation revenue, subsidy on the price of renewable electricity, and the CDM subsidy. However, the instability of wind power resources, restraints on wind power’s access to the national power grid, and the fast increasing installed capacity in the wind power industry has made the profitability of the wind power business rely more and more on the CDM subsidy.
