05 八 11 Sinovel took full advantage of the boom in the Chinese market

Vestas is still the world’s top wind  turbine generator manufacturer in terms of its percentage of market volume, but GE Energy lost its title as the second largest supplier to China’s Sinovel. Together Vestas and Sinovel delivered 10,228 MW of capacity in 2010. The two leading suppliers’ share of the total deliveries to the market was 25.9 percent in the year, which is a one percent increase compared with that of 2009 from the two players.

Sinovel took full advantage of the boom in the Chinese market, enabling it to move up from the third position in 2009 to second in 2010. Conversely, GE Energy dropped to third place due to the economic downturns in the US market. And, GE Energy is closely followed by another Chinese supplier, Goldwind, which installed almost the same number of turbines as GE in 2010. German Enercon ranks at No. 5 in the world, and is followed by Indian-based Suzlon Group at No. 6.

In their home wind power generator market Chinese domestic turbine manufacturers made further gains, while foreign-owned manufacturers only achieved a 10.5 percent market share in 2010 – a 3.5 percent drop from the previous year. Along with Sinovel and Goldwind, two other Chinese wind turbines manufacturers were listed in this year’s top 10 in terms of global capacity delivered. Dongfang, the third largest Chinese manufacturer, first entered the top 10 list in 2009, and United Power entered for the first time in 2010. Meanwhile, other Chinese companies Mingyang, Sewind and Hara XEMC, listed as No. 11, No. 14 and No. 15 in the world respectively, are emerging to challenge the positions of the traditional market leaders from Europe and the US.

It is worth noting that 2010 also saw more MW-rated Chinese manufactured turbines exported. During the year, five Chinese turbine suppliers installed 13 machines in five different foreign markets. Following its first three 1.5-MW direct drive wind turbines installed in the US in 2009, Goldwind installed six units of its 750-kW-rated gear drive turbines in Cuba. Meanwhile, Mingyang and A-Power installed their first wind turbines in the US market in 2010 and HEAG also installed three 1.5-MW turbines in Chile and White Russia.

01 八 11 Wind turbines are getting really big

Wind turbines are getting really big — some with blades as long as a football field — and more powerful, often generating 50 times more electricity than the first generation of wind-power machines built in the 1980s.

But scientists are also studying how to harness the wind in different ways that could help allay concerns that today’s turbines are unattractive, noisy and sometimes even dangerous.

Already in the works: Turbines that float and small wind turbines that fly. Turbines without blades and turbines with blades fat enough to fit a double-decker bus inside.

They won’t just be on hillsides either. Some will be in the ocean, while others will be on rooftops and light poles. A few will even be in the sky.

One design was inspired by the humble bumblebee.

Sabri Sansoy, a graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and former rocket engineer, has built a 19-foot-tall prototype whose blades, rather than spin in a circle, move in a figure-eight motion like the insect’s wings. Sansoy hopes the design will generate more electricity than turbines of similar size.

“I’ve been called everything from brilliant to a nincompoop over this,” said Sansoy, whose Marina del Rey, Calif., company, Green Wavelength, is looking to commercialize the technology.

But “there’s a lot of people interested in this kind of thing, taking energy out of the wind,” he said.

That’s because there’s a lot of money being poured into finding ways to ease off coal-based electricity. Last year, the Department of Energy set aside a record $79 million for its wind generators -program budget — nearly $20 million more than its previous top allotment in 1980.

18 七 11 wind energy industry experienced a significant slowdown in 2010

After years of strong growth, the wind energy industry experienced a significant slowdown in 2010 as a result of the global economic recession. Given the 18-month project cycle for a wind farm from feasibility study to electricity production, the global downturn had a delayed impact on the pace of new wind power installations. Wind power experienced strong cumulative growth in 2008 (29%) and 2009 (32%), due to a large volume of projects that had been initiated in late 2006 through 2008. However, 2010 results (22% growth) reflect the impact of the recession on what is still one of the world’s most significant renewable energy markets.

According to a new report from Pike Research, growth rates of new wind installations will continue to fall short of the industry’s boom years. However, turbine deployment activity remains strong and overall capacity will continue to rise at a healthy pace. The cleantech market intelligence firm forecasts that total wind generation capacity, including both onshore and offshore projects, will increase from 194.3 gigawatts (GW) in 2010 to 562.9 GW by 2017. By that year, Pike Research forecasts that wind power installations will represent a $153 billion global industry, up from $56 billion in 2010.

“Despite the challenging market conditions for the wind energy industry, this is a dynamic time for innovation in the market,” says senior analyst Peter Asmus. “Equipment vendors are pushing turbines to sizes never before thought practical or economical. Some of the world’s top engineering challenges of the 21st century are taking place in factories longer than football fields. But there is also much at stake as the companies push technological limits and take major market risks in an increasingly competitive sector.”

Asmus adds that China’s leadership in wind energy deployment is both an opportunity and a challenge for European and American companies looking to compete in that market and internationally. Europe remains a technology leader and is exploring the next frontier of wind energy with offshore deployments. The United States is lagging in many respects, but most industry players are optimistic about the future as costs continue to drop dramatically. In some markets, wind energy has already reached grid parity, a trend that Asmus says will continue to become more common around the world.

Pike Research’s report, “Global Wind Energy Outlook”, provides an in-depth analysis of global opportunities in the onshore and offshore wind energy markets, as well as an examination of key challenges facing the industry. It examines technology innovations that will influence the future direction of the market and also features detailed profiles of key industry players, including a competitive regional analysis of the three major wind energy markets today across their respective technology, policy, and capital environments. Market forecasts extend through 2017 and include projections for installed capacity, installation costs, and offshore production revenue, all segmented by onshore, offshore, region, and country. An Executive Summary of the report is available for free download on the firm’s website.

13 七 11 China has grown into a global power in renewable energy

With Japan looking to hedge its bets on nuclear energy by exploring other renewable energy sources, Chinese companies are eagerly vying for a seat at the table, anteing up its leadership in wind and solar power technology.

While Japan has built 54 nuclear reactors, China has grown into a global power in renewable energy, although its domestic market is fraught with problems. China also has 13 nuclear reactors and is building 28 more.

Top manufacturers such as Goldwind Science and Technology Co. and Yingli Green Energy Holding Co. are looking to break into the Japanese market as wind turbine generator and solar power gets renewed attention following the accident at the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant.

The Chinese government has committed public funds to improving the international competitiveness of manufacturers of renewable energy facilities.

The government adopted a policy of encouraging the use of local products until it was abolished in February in the face of criticism from the United States, who felt it was giving an unfair advantage to Chinese firms. Goldwind Science and Technology has produced 7,800 wind turbines, or triple the number installed in Japan, since it was established 13 years ago.

The company, based in Urumqi, Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region, ranks among the world’s five top makers of wind power generation facilities.

It has accumulated technologies by acquiring a German company and now exports to the United States.

Yingli Green Energy Holding Co., a major wind generator manufacturer of solar panels established in 1987, has increased its presence in European markets, working with a German partner.

The company, based in Baoding, Hebei province, operates offices in the United States, Germany, France, Italy and other countries.

Its credo is to provide “green energy affordable to the home wind turbines public.” To raise its profile, the company has become an official sponsor for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, following upon its sponsorship of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

08 七 11 Chinese wind blows strong in Ireland‎

A week of industrial-scale initiatives in wind and solar had as its highlight Chinese wind turbine manufacturer Sinovel’s capture of a deal to supply 1GW of turbines to Ireland. The transaction will be by far the largest coup for a Chinese wind turbine maker in Europe so far, and will create some anxiety in countries such as Germany, Spain and Denmark that have established turbine assembly industries.
Sinovel will supply the machines for €1.5 billion ($US2.2 billion) worth of wind farms under development over the next five years by Irish company Mainstream Renewable Power.
Mainstream, headed by Eddie O’Connor, the entrepreneur behind Airtricity, one of the most active wind farm developers of the last decade, says it will get debt finance for the new projects from China Development Bank, the state-owned lender.
The deal between Mainstream and Sinovel for small wind turbines will shine a spotlight on the dilemma facing political leaders in Europe and North America over the supply of renewable energy technology. China produces many of the cheapest wind turbines and solar panels in the world, providing the opportunity for countries to install low-cost renewable power. On the other hand, importing Chinese hardware will not create the “green jobs” that politicians crave.
Sinovel is attempting to assuage this concern by raising the prospect of inward investment in Ireland, or nearby. Lecheng Li, the company’s senior vice president, said: “As we gain certainty on project execution schedules, we will review our plans for localising operation and maintenance activities as well as possible component manufacturing.”
Ireland is not the first European country to see the prospect of the installation of Chinese-made turbines. In April, Sinovel agreed to team up with Athens-based Public Power Corporation to develop wind farms in Greece.
And the US has been the scene of a number of deals involving Chinese home turbine  turbines makers in the last two years. Mainstream is developing a 106.5-megawatt project in Illinois with China’s Xinjiang Goldwind Science & Technology, and Goldwind also has projects in Minnesota, Ohio and Rhode Island.

04 七 11 China will expand its offshore wind power installed capacity to 5 GW

According to Chinese Renewable Energy Industries Association, China will expand its offshore wind power installed capacity to 5 GW by 2015 and 30 GW by 2020.

CREIA forecast came during the announcement that Offshore Wind China 2011, the largest industrial seminar and exhibition of offshore windmill power in Asia is being held from June 15 to 17 in east China Shanghai City.

According to Mr Qin Haiyan secretary general of the China Wind Energy Association, Offshore wind development in China remains in the early stages due to complex operating environments for offshore turbines, high technological requirements and construction difficulties.

In 2009, China had only 63,000 kilowatts offshore wind turbines installed, about 21% of the newly installed offshore wind power in the United Kingdom the fastest growing country of the year. The year 2010 marked the start of China offshore wind power sector transition from research and pilot projects to operational wind farms.

In March 2010, Mr Shi Lishan deputy director of the New Energy and Renewable Energy Department of the National Energy Bureau said top priority would be given to developing offshore mini wind generator projects in the course of boosting the flourishing wind power industry.

In June 2010, the first stage project of East Sea Bridge Offshore Wind Farm went into operation in Shanghai. Totaling 102 MW, it is China first large-scale offshore homebuilt wind generator farm located to the east side of the Shanghai East Sea Bridge. It comprises 34 units of 3 MW Sinovel turbines.

Offshore wind power construction is a priority in China this year. In January, the NEB said China would kick off construction of 1 GW offshore wind power projects in 2011. The public tender for the 1 GW offshore concession projects, totaling four wind farms in east China Jiangsu Province was homemade wind generator announced in October 2010. They will use Sinovel, Goldwind and Shanghai Electric turbines.

29 六 11 China faces a 30GW wind power shortfall this summe

China will increase its offshore wind power installed capacity to 5 gigawatts (GW) by 2015 and 30GW by 2020, the National Energy Administration said Wednesday.

The public tender for the second round of offshore wind power concession projects with a total installed capacity of 1.5GW to 2GW will be completed during the first half of 2012, the administration said at a meeting held in the city of Nantong, Jiangsu province.

Liu Qi, deputy director of the administration, said that relevant departments should recognize the importance and urgency of developing offshore wind power.
The country often faces severe power shortages in summers, with wind  power generation and transmission systems unable to cope with rising demand.

China faces a 30GW power shortfall this summer, according to data from the China Electricity Council.

Liu said the country should expedite the establishment of an advanced and fully-equipped offshore wind power industry to boost its large-scale development.

In June 2010, Shanghai’s East Sea Bridge’s 100MW offshore wind farm project was completed. It is currently the only offshore wind turbine generator farm that has been put into operation outside of Europe.

26 六 11 Dalian wind power equipment industry chain shape

June 22 to 24, the Eighth Asian Wind Energy Conference and International Wind Energy Exhibition held in Beijing. In the domestic wind power industry generally “sluggish” in contrast, the lifting of Dalian Heavy Industry Group as a “leader” of Dalian wind power equipment wind turbines manufacturers collective appearance of the exceptionally bright. Heavy lifting on display 6 MW small wind turbine is the core component of goodwill for the exhibition “BMW”, leading the trend of large-scale wind turbine. After years of industrial restructuring, DHI DCW Group has become the largest megawatt wind power base of the core components of development, Dalian wind power equipment industry chain has been basically formed.

As the wind industry’s most far-reaching influence on the show, the show attracted heavy lifting, Dalian Metallurgical Bearing, Dalian Bo-controlled automation, wind generator sensing and a number of Dalian Feng and even enterprises. Dalian wind power equipment business after years of “Revival” has mastered the core technology to mass production, stable performance, high-quality products, revealing a mature temperament.

Reporters from the show forum that China’s wind energy industry started late, at least 20 years, and the pace of development has forced the world’s attention. However, the rapid development of the drawbacks is the core component of wind power equipment, mostly hovered in the low end. After several years of domestic wind turbines industry, “Great Leap Forward” development, entered a “Ebb Tide” period of adjustment. DHI DCW Group from 2004 MW of wind power generation equipment developed core components by absorption and innovation, has become the largest MW wind power base of the core components of development. In 2010, wind power product sales revenue of 8.5 billion, the Group’s total sales revenue of more than 50%. U.S. GE, Mitsubishi and other world famous companies have for many years, with India now has two well-known enterprises to establish a partnership fan, the international trend has emerged.
